Genre: Celtic
Sound description: Pirate music - ARGH!
RIYL: ARGH!
Formed: 1999
City: Dallas, TX
Web site: http://www.thebilgepumps.com
It all started in the sleepy village of Hawkwood sometime around the summer of 1999 - or 1699 if you refuse to surrender the fantasy. It was a hodgepodge of people: some friends, some mere acquaintances, and some simply blocked from memory. Some days there were 10 people, others three or four, but the group always found sometime during the weekend to walk around and torture the five people that paid to get in that day. From these humble roots the Bilge Pumps were born. It wasn't until a trip to the renaissance faire later that year that the idea of solidifying into a band was kicked around.
The band has had more than a dozen members, closed down three Irish pubs in the Dallas area and performed hundreds of shows.

More often than not, I was one of the fireant and mosquito bitten 10 paying customers at Hawkwood. I was usually to be found hanging out in a Rennie Pirate lass..errr....wench...outfit swilling grog and cheering the Boy-o Bilge Rats on. Their harmony is good enough to enjoy sober, even better after mugs of Guinness. Then again, most things are.
Scarborough Faire brought the Men of ARRRRGGGHHH aka The Bilge Pumps into a larger venue. My CD collection holds 4 or 5 disks of their raucous renditions of sea shanty and landlubber vs pirates songs. My iPod has few fave songs saved for listening during gym workouts. Bawdy humor, jibes at each other, superb harmony, and a genuine love and affection for the music are only a part of what makes these singers so delightful. Look down while they are singing and discover your feet are tapping in time. All things considered, I think The Bilge Pumps are definitely one of the Best of the Rennie/Celtic/Folk groups around. Their CDs are worth buying. Ditto for an iTunes splurge.
