There is no doubt in my mind that Arlington Jones is one of the most special musicians we have in Dallas. His opening set last night at Brooklyn Jazz Cafe was playful, exciting, entertaining, and flat out masterful. The pianist who is best known locally for his work with the Dallas Jazz Orchestra showcased his range as he went from straight ahead bop tunes to original funk tunes to a slow blues jam. While his proficiency as a keyboard technician is undeniable, what stands out about Arlington is the passion and energy he brings to every tune. While his fingers always maintain perfect form, the rest of Arlington's body is constantly moving, swaying, bobbin', weaving, and shaking to every note he plays. His knowledge of the jazz greats allows him to pull from a wide range of influences depending on what is appropriate for the tune and style he plays. On one tune, I was reminded of Horace Silver's funky staccato style then on the next I was reminded momentarily of Peter Martin's soft touch. Yet throughout the entire performance, Arlington's own personal warmness and humor was evident in every one of his musical phrases. That individuality is what makes Arlington Jones an artist in the truest sense of the word. Add him to your "must see" list.
