Glass Cactus grand opening before the grand opening
Glass Cactus entrance - more valet people per capita than probably anywhere else in DFW last night. I made them work extra hard because the camera that took these pictures was lost for about 10 minutes (i.e., it fell under the seat in my car because I'm an idiot.) I told the valet people, "I don't know where my camera is. I think it's in the car." And they were so nice and said, "We can go get your car." Some guy yelled at another guy and said, "Go get this car!" A guy ran out and got my car after someone had parked it. I looked for the camera and didn't find it, so I told them they could park it again. I looked elsewhere inside the club and didn't find it and thought - dang, I better check the car again. So I went back outside and the valet people said, "We can go get your car again." And I said, "No, that's OK. I'll just go out there and look myself." It was only about 100 yards away, for pete's sake. But they said, "No! No! We'll pull it right up here." I had about four valet people all over me, so eager for work. So one guy yelled at another guy again, and that guy sprinted out there (without cursing heavily like I would have done at that point) and got the car. Lo and behold the camera was stuck way under the seat. Basically, this is what we in the trade call "a boring story."

Overall, it's a pretty cool place. I know that all workers were on their best behavior, but I must say I was truly impressed by so many friendly folks and their service. The music to be featured there is supposed to be Texas-style music only (rock, blues, country, etc.) But the Gaylord overlords may use their Grand Ole Opry Power (or GOOP as we in the trade say) to pull in names such as the aforementioned Rimes. She is from Garland, don't forget.
Check out this very touching (not really) photo essay, a very brief video of the inside of the club and the outside. My favorite, though, is a 3-second clip of a man with very green pants and a pink tie going through a door with a couple plates in his hand.

Redefining the Disfranchised: The Political Art of Nina Allender As we continue to celebrate the 88th Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote, there's a prime opportunity to view influential art from the era. Nina Evans Allender drew political cartoons for The Suffragist from 1914 into the 1920s, transforming stereotypical views of who a suffragist was. Over the years, Allender contributed more than 250 political cartoons to the movement, a number of which are on display at the Women's Museum at Fair Park. More info
