DALLAS A Brookhaven College sophomore, Vanessa Tapia, has been selected as president of the American Student Association of Community Colleges, ASACC. Tapia studies public policy at Brookhaven College and has taken an active role in student government at the college since she first arrived. She is the first Texas student selected to be president of the ASACC.
The ASACC had its Summer Leadership Institute in Philadelphia, June 11-14. Student leaders from around the country were able to apply for the institute, and more than a dozen were chosen from those to move forward as candidates for the ASACC executive leadership. Tapia was one of several candidates interviewed in a process that matches students with executive roles for the association. She hopes to bring a new perspective to the ASACC student leadership and work with advisors and other student leaders to increase student involvement.
Tapia graduated from R.L. Turner High School. She served as president of the Brookhaven Student Government Association during her freshman year and plans to run again in the fall semester. She intends to complete her associate’s degree before transferring to a four-year university and hopes to attend Georgetown University.
The ASACC is an advocacy group, focused on promoting citizenship, leadership and advocacy among community college students. Each year, the ASACC leadership formulates a platform of community college issues that students can take to national legislators.

Laurie Anderson Laurie Anderson is indescribably delicious. She's hitting McFarlin tonight with her new show, Homeland, and you can bet it will contain intellectual stimulation and pure unadulterated weirdness in equal measure. An album will follow the Homeland tour in 2009. More info
