Send in the clowns. (No, really!)

Doris Day with a whip. Scary.

Doris Day with a whip. Scary.

Get ready for a bit of the Big Top from 7 - 9 p.m. on July 7, as the Studio Movie Grill (Dallas location) teams with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey to bring (brace yourself) Billy Rose's Jumbo to the big screen for the first time in 40 years. (At least.)

For the price of your admission, not only do you get Jumbo, the fabulous performing pachyderm, but also Doris Day in the role of Kitty Wonder - and it's a wonder this picture of her posing with a whip hasn't made it onto some of the more obscure websites I occasionally peruse in the course of researching a piece... but that's another story.

BUT WAIT! - there's more. Like a pizza buffet, circus-themed free stuff (whips, anyone?) and chances to win really cool special prizes, like a Studio Movie Grill movie basket, a Ringling Bros. circus basket (with VIP tickets) and season tics to the 2008-2009 season of the Dallas Children's Theater for a family of four.

Circus Movie Mania

  • When: Monday, July 7, 2008, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Where: Studio Movie Grill (Dallas), 11170 North Central Expressway , Dallas
  • Cost: $15
  • Age limit: All ages

Ringling Bros. Goodwill Ambassadors of Laughter Slappy and Monday will be on hand to meet and greet the younger crowd. And they'll probably converse with any old geezers who want to stop and chat, too.

All box office proceeds go to Dallas Children's Theater in support of their educational programs, so your $15 ticket comes with and elephant load of good karma.

To purchase tickets in advance, call 214-740-0051, or visit the Dallas Children's Theater website.

Laurie Anderson Laurie Anderson is indescribably delicious. She's hitting McFarlin tonight with her new show, Homeland, and you can bet it will contain intellectual stimulation and pure unadulterated weirdness in equal measure. An album will follow the Homeland tour in 2009. More info
