Laurie Anderson Laurie Anderson is indescribably delicious. She's hitting McFarlin tonight with her new show, Homeland, and you can bet it will contain intellectual stimulation and pure unadulterated weirdness in equal measure. An album will follow the Homeland tour in 2009. More info

I have previously visited Brooklyn, but after their recent expansion, I'm afraid they are experiencing growing pains. There were 8 of us in our party and all our food was wrong and/or cold and we had terrible service. When we asked for the manager we were told there was not one there. I was extremely disappointed and will not return for quite a while.

This place is great!!! I live in Harvey,Louisiana, but every time I come home to Dallas for a visit, I make sure me and my girls head straight to Brooklyn Jazz. Ms.Tate, owner is always so gracious, and the staff is the best. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!

Wonderful music, charming welcome from owner Lorna Tate, good food, unpredictable menu, good prices, terrific caring pro service, smooth bar with an upscale rare-rare-in-Dallas Chicago-esque racially/culturally mixed ambience. What the hell is not to like with this place? Be sure and go to no-cover Sunday brunch for starters. Extremely professional grove here, dedicated to jazz. Don't miss out on this one.

I discovered this joint when a jazz band I enjoy, The Freddie Jones Quartet, was playing there. I went not knowing what to expect and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The stage for music is small and the sound system not up to snuff, but the cafe has good enough acoustics that the bands by and large can overcome that issue. The staff is very attentive and courteous and the veggie burgers are outstanding. The staff is happy to accommodate any special dietary needs as well for those among us who have dietary allergies. I have visited there several times since and an impressed with the quality and consistency of both the service and the food. Though I have not yet been there on a hopping weekend night where reservations are required for dinner, I can say easily that this is a fabulous weeknight date night place to go and share a good meal, fine music, and a libation, if you so choose.

Another trip to SSoL for tonight. Pass by and pull in to the anywhere parking.
Tonight, the Sueyoung Yoo Quartet is set to entertain. We are offered any seat in the house since there are really only two patrons in the place. The crowd fluctuates such that at times there are more staff and musicians than diners.
The space is rather sizeable, with a good sized patio. It does not seem to be heated. The wall hangings seem to have prominent teeth.
The staff are exceptionally friendly. Tuesdays have half price appetizers. Jamacian patties? Fun - except if you think what is usually in them. Buffalo chicken strips - flat and a little too salty, but a generous portion.
Sueyoung gives us some Korean retooled into Jazz beats and follows with Me, Myself and I.
Vegetarian burger and pasta salad gets a thumbs up from her. The bun does better than the usual Mccains. Chicken sandwich is really rather pleasant and the potato salad wholesome. Chocolate cake is soft and not too sweet.
Two major problems:
1) Where the hell is everybody - Mi Cocina? 2) What is Dallas' problem with naming things after NYC landmarks? Do we really have this much of an inferiority complex - West Village, Tribeca, Brooklyn, that townhouse complex on Mckinney "Grammercy" (they know it's spelled wrong, right?) - more on this in another rant.
